Sree Sankara College

Sree Sankara College, named after the great philosopher Saint Adi Sankara, was established with a vision to perpetuate the memory of the great Acharya and to nurture his birthplace as a cultural citadel. Swami Agamananda founded the institution in the year 1953. The foundation of the college was laid on the 28 of August 1953 by His Highness the. Maharaja of Travancore in the gracious presence of the Maharaja of Cochin and other dignitaries. The institution was first affiliated to Travancore-Cochin University and later, the college came under Kerala University. Presently it is one of the leading institutions under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

In June 1960, the patronage of the college became vested in his Holiness Jagad Guru Sri Sri Sankaracharya Swamigal of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sarada Peetham, Sringeri. Presently our patron Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahaswamigal of Sringeri Mutt steers the administration through a Board of Directors with Sri K.N.Ramani as the chairman and Sri B.S. Krishnan as Managing Director.

Beginning

The institution began with a student strength of about 250, offering intermediate courses. It was raised to the status of a first grade college in 1956. Now the college has a student strength of approximately 1700 and offers 14 UG courses 8 PG courses and has two centers for doctoral research in Economics and Commerce.
The infrastructure of the college is awe inspiring. The building complex is complete with facilities providing an atmosphere conducive to concentrated acaden pursuits. The college library, Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha library hail has a collection of over 40000 titles with reading facilities for teachers and students.

The college has a fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art computer centre offering high quality education in the Inf Tech arena. A top class auditorium named after Sri Bharathi Threertha and a fully air conditioned seminar hail well equipped with all facilities for conducting seminars, presentation of research projects besides conducting refresher and orientation
courses underline the sheer size of developmental initiatives. The college also provides adequate facilities for the students to take part in sports and games. The NCC cadets have had the honour of participating in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi

A peer team of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), a statutory body of the UGC, visited the college in the year 2000 to make an on-the-spot assessment. Satisfied with the curricular and co-curricular achievements and the infrastructure, they conferred the college with four-star status.


SWAMY AGAMANANDAJI
Founder
Swamy Agamanandaji,was more than a ‘sanyasi.’ He was an educationist, social reformer, orator ,writer,organiser and visionary par excellence. Swamiji was born on August 27, 1896 at Chavara. He obtained a post graduate degree in Sanskrit from Madras Presidency college.
Swamiji became a ‘Sanyasi’ in 1928. Swamy Agamanandaji established Sree Ramakrishna Adwaithashramam at Kalady on April 26, 1936. Later he dedicated his life for the upliftment of the down-trodden people and worked relentlessly for social and educational reforms. He established Sharada ayurveda hospital, Harijan colony(Mattoor) Poor home and a library in Kalady. Swamy Agamananda established Sree Sankara College in 1953. His famous books include “ Veera Vaani”, ‘Bharatheeya Vidyabhyasam’, ‘Keralathinte Bhavi’,’Adhyathmika Grandhangalum Vimarsanangalum’. He died at age of 65 on April 17, 1961.

KALADY

Kalady is the birth place of Adi Sankara. This pilgrim centre, situated on the banks of the river Perlyar, is 45 km from Ernakulam. There are two shrines in memory of Adi Sankaracharya —one dedicated to Adi Sankara as Dakshlnamurthy and the other to Goddess Sharada maintained by Sringeri Mutt. There Is also an ancient Shtl Krishna Temple and another temple known as the International Temple, which was built with the hope that it would ultimately become a temple for all religions and an abode of peace.

Places of interest around Kalady

Malayattoor. Situated on the slopes of the picturesque western ghats, Malayattoor is an important christian pilgrim centre. This pilgrim centre is believed to have been blessed by St. Thomas. the apostle of Christ. and the church atop the hill was established in AD 900.

Iringol Forest Temple. This temple is situated 8 kms away from kalady. amidst dense forest.

Kallil Temple
. 22 kms away from Kalady there is a 1 9 century jam temple. The temple is cut from a huge rock and a climb of 120 steps lead to the temple.

Kodanad. Kodanad lies on the southern banks of Periyar amongst the scenic beauty of the high ranges. It was once the largest elephant taming centres in South India. There is an elephant training centre and a mini zoo here.

Thattekkad: Well known bird sanctuary.
